The late night wave of attacks have sent shockwaves throughout the Middle East and signify a major escalation in geopolitical hostilities.
In the early morning hours of Saturday February 28th, president Donald Trump released a statement confirming that the United States military in conjunction with Israel has begun to launch a series of preemptive strikes against the nation of Iran.
In the early morning announcement Trump declared the aims of the US operations are to;
• Destroy Iran’s missile program
• “Raise their missile industry to the ground”
• “Annihilate” Iran’s navy
• Eliminate the operational ability of Iran-backed militias
• Prevent roadside bomb and proxy attacks
Acknowledging the severity of these escalations, president Trump stated American servicemen will likely die in these operations said to "liberate the Iranian people" from what he referred to as "an evil regime", stating;
"We may have casualties, that often happens in war".
Trump issued an ultimatum to the IRGC and Iranian Security Forces to either lay down their arms or "be met with certain death", while imploring the Iranian people to rise up and overthrow their government.
The situation is developing rapidly as smoke can be seen rising over Tehran, as well as Tel Aviv in the wake of retaliatory strikes against Israel. Israeli airspace has been closed and reports are already beginning to surface of other retaliatory strikes in the region as a top Iranian official declares that all US and Israeli assets in the region are designated as legitimate targets.
Footage posted by Iran's PressTV appears to show strikes impacting the US Naval base in Bahrain as retaliation mounts.
Congressman Thomas Massie, who has been one of the few staunchly opposed to the Trump Administration's war mongering against Iran, took to social media to acknowledge the blatant illegality of President Trump's actions, reiterating that all acts of war must be authorized by Congress.
Despite Trump's claims that the intent is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, intelligence has consistently indicated that Tehran has not sought to develop a nuclear arsenal or the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles ICBMs.
Recently, US envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff reiterated the unfounded claims to Fox News that "Iran is “probably a week away” from having the materials necessary to make a nuclear bomb". An assertion so unfounded that even the typically hawkish Jerusalem Post refuted by saying:
The US envoy left out that Iran currently has no access to its material, no machines to enrich it, and no weapons program to use it for any operational purpose.
In fact, the claim that Iran has sought to develop nuclear weaponry has been unfounded for over three decades while consistently repeated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his constant push for war against the country.
Despite President Donald Trump's claims that the US assault against Iran is the result of 47 years of Iranian aggression, the truth remains that western hostilities against Iran stretch back over 70 years. In the summer of 1953 American and British intelligence agencies undertook Operation Ajax, a covert terror campaign waged by CIA and MI6 resulting in a color revolution that overthrew Iran's democratically elected government to seize control of the nation's oil reserves and installed the repressive regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, which brutalized the Iranian people with US backing until the revolution of 1979.
In the decades since, the United States and its allies have consistently promoted false narratives asserting an urgent need to attack Iran to justify the imperialist expansion of unipolar hegemony and the status quo of the west's neoliberal world order.
