PS: For today’s soothing guitar, Clarence White’s ‘33 Guitar Instrumentals’. A leader of the country-rock movement of the late ‘60s before his early death, White was a child prodigy who took up the guitar at six. By the age of ten, he started a bluegrass trio with his brothers called Three Little Country Boys where they played guitar, mandolin & banjo. At 13, their group appeared on two episodes of the Andy Griffith show! (I grew up with Andy, so seeing this was a big deal to me). After meeting Doc Watson, White began to experiment with flat-picking & using the guitar in bluegrass, not just as a maintainer of rhythm, but as an instrument for soloing & driving the music. He became a respected studio musician & did session work for the likes of Ricky Nelson, The Monkees, the Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Pat Boone, Randy Newman, Linda Ronstadt, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne & Gram Parsons (his frequent collaborator). Also a musical inventor, with Parsons, he created the StringBender, a spring-lever to allow him to drop his guitar's B string up or down a full tone without taking his hands off the guitar. This allowed for the simulation of a pedal steel guitar's crying sound. When he joined the Byrds, it became a distinctive part of their sound. Unfortunately, after a White Brothers concert on July 15, 1973, Clarence White was struck & killed by a drunk driver while loading equipment. He was just 29. But his legacy lived on & many of the most influential flat-pickers of the 20th century cite White as a primary influence. Music archivist & writer Alec Palao called White "one of a handful of true greats amongst the instrumentalists of 20th century popular music".
